| Savanna's Bangla |
Monday, August 2nd
Niru is really getting the hang of things! She successfully created banana bread for us yesterday with the instructions of “banana + bread = banana bread”. From her receipts from the market it seems like she bought baking soda, flour, salt and sugar and then we have a delicious loaf of greatness waiting for us on a cooling rack. She makes our dining room table up with plates, napkins and silverware and delivers us each of the dishes on a tray. I feel like a princess! (Also, my princess bed I sleep in adds to that as well. I imagine that I need the sheer curtains for beauty instead of their awesome practicality.) Other than meetings, not much to report about today! Had lasagna for lunch and heard from some of the veteran teachers that it is typical to gain weight in the first months in Bangladesh instead of lose it. I am starting to see why since they are stuffing delicious meals down our throats. Although, I don’t argue- the food is comforting and takes my mind off of missing everyone back home! We had the internet man come this afternoon. As if by clockwork, the power went off moments after his arrival, meaning that he couldn’t set up our connection. He came back

| Reason for Power Outages? |
a few hours later to finish everything up, but the place that controls the internet had lost power. He left us sans internet. We headed to Shaundele’s (the HS principal) house for dinner. The power tonight has been especially unpredictable. She started losing it around 4pm and it went on and off the whole time we were there, as well. Can you imagine planning a dinner party without electricity?! It turned out great! We ate on her rooftop that has a HUGE bamboo roof constructed in a pyramid shape. She has couches with huge pillows and tons of potted plants for ambiance. We had some luxuries like Ritz crackers and triscuts and I was in heaven:) that, in combination with homemade mango salsa and a meal of sushi and glass noodles. Deeeelish!! We got a tour of her place in between outages and then walked home (escorted by Jerry- HS math teacher). When we got home- WE HAD INTERNET!! It was awesome! I got right online and had my dad get on skype and chats going with 4 people! A few seconds later- power outage. Right now, we don’t have any outlets that run on our generator. You bet I’ll be filing a work order tomorrow that changes this! I may even had a few taka to get the ball rolling ;) Anyway, if we are ever chatting and I suddenly leave you for an hour- know that it is not because I have found someone more important to talk to- but that I am in DHAKA- the city of lights sometimes and sometimes not.
