The Daily Laugh

At lunch in the Teachers Lounge, sometimes we pass around The Daily Star to see what is going on in the news.  The Daily Star is one of the main English newspapers here.  Before I came to Dhaka, I used this newspaper as a way of figuring out what life was like in my future home.  Soon, I started to have nightmares about tiger attacks, bloodbaths, freak storms, and so much more.  I stopped reading the paper and actively avoided all links my dad would send me... he was in on how skewed the news was and found the articles amusing, but it was still too haunting for me to read! Now, I feel like I can read the Daily Star and laugh along with my fellow teachers about some of the ridiculous things they say.  For example, the following article regarding the removal of cables around certain parts of the city.  As you have seen from earlier blogposts, the wiring in this place is unlike anything I'd ever imagined.  I could have sent in a few of my own snapshots that would be a better visual of what the problem is here than the one they selected for this piece.  Although this news is not scary or going to give me the heebie jeebies walking around in Dhaka, it did provide one of our "Daily Laughs" in the lounge.  Click on the article here: Removal Order Runs into Snag

Scholastic News: Yesterday was an exhausting/eventful day! I had my Theater IIs in the morning.  We are working on a Storytelling Unit at this time and yesterdays project was to create Fractured Fairy Tales in small groups.  I was SO entertained! These 10th graders are imaginative and funny in ways that continue to surprise me.  It was such a great start to the day!  After that, I headed to the ARA with 4 other teachers and 27 IB diploma candidates for a retreat to learn about the intense programme they are entering into! We spent the remainder of the afternoon at the American Club playing games, getting logistical stuff out of the way, learning about the IB and discussing fears/concerns about the programme through different mediums.
In the end, we all put on our IB shirts, snapped a group photo and jumped back on the buses to return to AISD.  I helped Lauren do a few more touch-ups to the bulletin boards, and then her driver took us back to the ARA for a yummy dinner! I had the black bean wrap which was delicious, but doesn't quite compare to the Southwest Veggie Wrap at the Virginian ;) Next, we went back to school for Back To School Night! A lot of parents showed up and were avid listeners to all our golden nuggets of wisdom concerning what we do with their kiddos every day! I was exhausted when I made it home last night and fell asleep in my school clothes, sans mosquito net, lights on, and Raymond Carver story in hand on top my covers.

As we learned this summer, squirrels eat electric cables, so maybe Dhaka needs a few more Virginia Grey Squirrels. Humans can also eat squirrels, so there you go. Two problems solved.
