Dinner with Sav and Sally and Mike
joined right after waking up! |
Tuesday, August 3rd
So in our a little too large intern apartment the three of us (Savanna, Briana and I) have been trying to make it more homey! To help with the large hallways and uninhabited spaces, we invited a few of our friends to stay. Spoony the cockroach and Akbar the gecko! Spoony got his name because he is the size of a wooden spoon and Akbar got his name because he is our new residential security guard. We found Spoony on they 2nd night here. He was under the sink checking out the cleaning supplies- you know just making sure nothing had any extra harmful pesticides that could make him a little queasy. And then we found Akbar tonight! We had ventured into Niru's area to reheat the meal she left us- chicken curry with rice and veggies! I'm a little wary of the chicken after seeing how fresh it is in the markets (still clucking), but I still had one bite.

Anyway... we were heating up our meal when I saw Akbar's long lemon lime tail emerging from behind the kitchen cabinet. Akbar is a Tokay gecko known for his strong jaws and loud mating call. He posed long enough for me to snap a photo of him doing one of his favorite activities-- climbing walls! He was on his way to defend us from critters of the night- including, but not limited to, scorpions and beetles! To see more about him click:

In order to make sure that we could help out our good friend Akbar, Savanna and I decided to bust out the "cockroach chalk"-- it only cost 25 taka so it is such a steal! You draw lines around places where you think Spoony and his friends may go, and they walk on it and "die". When the morning comes you spray them to paralyze them further and then toss them outside. They never truly die, so flushing them down the toilet could lead to an upsetting trip to the latrine later and a cockroach bite on your behind.

Thank goodness Niru is coming in the morning to chuck those cockroaches out the slits in the screens on the porch! Or we could leave them for Akbar to eat...
