The scene at the airport was a delightful welcome-back-to-Dhaka! My travels had their highs and lows.
High= dinner at Noodles & Co with Mike, Laura, Catherine, Katie, and Katie en route to Dulles.
Low= saying goodbye to Mike at the airport in front of awkward ticket counter man.
High= aisle seat with no one behind me on my Dulles to Doha leg of the journey
Low= after an already 6 hour layover, having an additional 2 hour delay in Doha
High= getting upgraded to First Class after a conversation with someone at the Qatar transfers desk
Low= pilot apologizing for the delay- explaining it was from a lack of visibility on the ground in Dhaka- and adding that while the visibility had not improved, we should be fine to land.
High= specialty drinks, warmed cashews, dinner on a silver platter, noise canceling headphones for my wide screen TV and a whole row to myself :)
Low= due to late arrival in Dhaka, not getting a chance to see Savanna and her Mom before they headed to Bangkok
High= First class line at immigration went really fast!
Low= it took 2 hours for my luggage to appear on the baggage carousel.
Anecdote: while waiting for my luggage, I realized that I was quite assimilated to Bangladeshi culture. Things that once would shock and confused me, now provide laughter! A man was jabbering on his cellphone and not paying attention to the baggage drifting by at a snail's pace. He looked up a few moments too late and realized that he needed to grab his luggage. So, using his best judgment and common sense, he yelled, leapt onto the carousel to sidestep other bags until he reached his own, and then retraced his steps only to tumble off the baggage carousel near his assigned trolly. I was not the least bit shocked! I simply laughed about it with my new lady friend and watched with amusement that other men liked his idea and started doing the same. In one case, a man was so excited that his bag appeared on the other side of the carousel, he jumped on, made it to the median leapt to the other side and successfully grabbed his bag with only stepping on a few others and knocking one off completely.
High= coming home to a clean apartment with a birthday scavenger hunt from Bree and a decorated bedroom door (artwork by Sally and Savanna) :)
Low= falling asleep at 4pm and starting a 4 day long cycle of unfortunate jet lag sleep deprivation
High= having lots of prime time to skype with Catherine and Katie when I was awake in the middle of the night!
